ABOUT US
NATIONAL HERstory
On December 1, 1987 at Binghamton University,
Founding Mothers Cynthia Santiago, Adriana Zamora, Carmen Ibeth Garcia-Quinones and Carol Elizabeth Torres created an organization that would not only serve as a voice for women in an academic setting, but would also provide sincere sisterhood and unconditional support while actively promoting academic achievement, service to the community, and cultural enrichment. Over three decades and more than 40 campuses later, the Hermanas of Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority Inc. continue the legacy of our Founders' vision by effectively bridging the gap between the Latino community and the campuses we represent. Today, almost two decades later, our goals and ideals continue to be exemplified by our Hermanas: Sisterhood, Leadership, Community Service, Cultural Awareness and Academic Excellence.
Though Latina-based, Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. is a non-discriminatory organization made up of women from all cultures, creed, disabilities, political beliefs, and sexual preferences.
GAMMA HERstory
In the Fall of 1989, four Latinas at the University of Pennsylvania...
Decided that there was a need for an organization that would not only contribute to the advancement of the Penn Latino community but also create a voice and a sisterhood for Latinas on campus. In addition, the organization would also provide community service to the university as well as the surrounding Philadelphia community. These four women sought out the Hermanas of Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc., and in the Spring of 1990, they established the first Latina sorority at University of Pennsylvania.
Subsequently, the Gamma Chapter expanded to include Temple University in the Spring of 2000, Bryn Mawr College in the Spring of 2001, Drexel University in the Fall of 2004, and Saint Joseph's University in the Spring of 2006.
AVANCE SCHOLARSHIP
